“Rediscovering British Surveyor and Mapmaker John Hills”

The development of cartography in the 18th century was vital to how citizens of North America came to understand their identities within their communities. This presentation will focus on the work of British surveyor and cartographer John Hills, whose life produced nearly seventy detailed manuscript maps of events between 1777-1815. Lecture is held in the Community Room. Onsite and street parking available.

“Elias Boudinot IV: The Continental Army’s First Commissary General of Prisoners” lecture by Joseph E. Wroblewski

After the successful invasion of NYC and surrounding areas by the British during 1776 and the thousands of American prisoners taken, George Washington called upon Congress to set up a centralized authority to deal with the handling of prisoners of war. This presentation will detail the many problems that Boudinot encountered while he held this position coming from both the British and the Continental Congress. Lecture is held in the Community Room. “Out with the Old, In with the New: New Sweden and The American Revolution” Lecture by Erick Burro

This talk will discuss South Jersey’s earliest colonial settlements in the Delaware Valley, which began as the New Sweden Colony by Peter Minuit, a former Dutch governor of New Amsterdam, on behalf of the Kingdom of Sweden, and their part during the American Revolution. An accompanying exhibit of photographs documenting places of this early period of colonial New Jersey history will be on display in the library’s Mezzanine Gallery during the month.
